Year of Completion:

Typology:
Museum

In 1619, the first African slaves in America arrived from the kingdom of Ndongo (known as Angola today) and landed in what is now known as Old Point Comfort, Virginia. This was the beginning of 240 years of bondage and many more years of segregation after that would occur in the United States.
This project required a museum to be designed that would celebrate African American artists and was to be built over the existing park at Old Point Comfort. My design is based on the plantations and fields these slaves were forced to work in. The rows of the fields are translated to volumes of the building which are then manipulated in response to the site. The design aims to connect the bondage of slavery with the freedom and expression of the featured artists. My plantation analysis has been used for some of the landscaping.
